After two days of walking, kayaking and everything in between, I came into the hike expecting yet another day of a full-body workout. I still had the badges of reddened skin from my kayaking outing, and the orienteering only threatened my sunburnt self as I went from rare to well-done on the second day under the hot noon. On entering the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, however, I was pleasantly surprised; the hike itself was fairly easy, and the food provided as lunch was a bonus for its flavour. The sun was insignificant, due in part to the shade of the trees and the cooling rain in the late afternoon, and what little sunburns I still had were blessed by the cool breeze of the forest. The best part? Socialising with friends. For hours on this trip we were able to chat and banter, revelling in the atmosphere of nature in the company of our friends, and lunches were filled with energy and life as we ate, chattering all the way. (Those noisy monkeys had some competition for once.) Even our little bear Peyton joined along! Of course we had difficulties and adversities; summiting the hill was a challenge we were willing to take, and many times we were lost in the woods without much outside of a map to guide us. However, it taught us to be resourceful and quick to act, and helped me learn to take initiative in times of need. In general, I can safely say that this was the best day of the camp, and of all the days I will look back upon this one and recall it as the best day of the year.
